Game Fishing:
Cape Town is one of the premier Game Fishing venues worldwide. The mighty broadbill swordfish are found in great numbers off this beautiful coastline. World records for albacore are often set. Other species, which occur in vast shoals, are yellowfin tuna, yellowtail and snoek. Game fish prefer water between 19 - 23c.
Best months are Oct/Nov & Feb - May. The broadbill swordfish is the ultimate challenge. Fishing at night, drifting above an underwater canyon some 38 miles offshore. Using squid and light-sticks the fish are usually located at depths of around 80 meters. Large luxury sportsfishing boats are available. They can take up to 8 passengers and all fuel, bait, tackle and crew are included. The best months are March - June. During the day trolling for albacore, yellowfin tuna and mako shark will prove to be most fruitful. Albacore up to 40 Kg are caught in great numbers using rapalas, feathers and lures. Once a shoal is located the boat will stop and sardine bait is used. Yellowfin tuna up to 100 Kg are also common. The best months for these fish are October - November and March - May. The autumn and winter months bring yellowtail and snoek. The method of fishing is the same as for the tuna species although lighter tackle (6kg) is usually employed. 10kg Line for albacore and 20kg tackle will suffice for yellowfin. 30kg Line is suitable for broadbill swordfish.
