Light Tackle Salt Water Angling:
At the western tip of the Garden Route lies the Breede River. The many photographs lining the wall of the Breede River Lodge bears testimony to the incredible catches that have been made over the years. The fish here are big and several world records for cob have been set here. The sandy banks at the mouth make fly fishing easy and a short cast will bring you into deep fast flowing waters. The
Kob, a kind of sea bass grows to over 100lbs. The current Breede River record is around the 140lb mark.
Smaller game fish may also be found. For those wishing to fish with conventional tackle and bait there are plenty of bottom feeders such as steenbras. There is also the opportunity to venture out through the mouth on a ski-boat where excellent catches of
Kob, cape salmon, shad and bottom feeders await.
Deep Sea fishing charters are also available at Mossel Bay, Knysna & Plettenberg
Bay.
The best months to visit are February through to April.
Bass Fishing:
Excellent Bass fishing may be enjoyed on the upper reaches
of the Breede river as well as Lake Pleasant near Knysna
Lake Pleasant is set in the heart of the Garden Route. It is one of South Africa's top bass fishing venues. The mild climate allows fishing all year round with Oct-Nov & Jan-May being the best months. Both trolling and casting of lures are possible. Fish of 2-4 kg are often caught. There are a number of attractions in the regions to keep the non-angler occupied.
TROUT - Fly Fishing:
Nestled away in the Outeniqua
Mountains lies the Outeniqua Trout Resort. The stream is well stocked with
rainbow and the
scenery is quite spectacular. The resort is around an hours drive from Knysna on
the Prince Alfred Pass.
