The bush camp operates year-round. We welcome single guests and
families with children and can take a maximum of six guests at one
time. Non-riding guests, hikers and birders are quite welcome and
are free to walk and hike on the reserve alone (anything from 2
to 15 kms). The mountain trails are well-marked and rewarding, but
are strenuous.
There is an extensive Iron Age ruin site on the reserve, situated
in a spectacular mountaintop position.
Guests may swim in the reserve dams and streams.
Equus Reserve is home to a great variety of birdlife which will
provide many hours of quiet enjoyment for keen birders.
We can also arrange game drives on neighbouring reserves or exhilarating
scenic light aircraft flights over the escarpment edge (highly recommended).
Day trips to Marakele National Park (45 minute drive away) with
a guide, picnic and refreshments can be organised. All activities
off the reserve are at an additional charge.
If you are self-driving, we can recommend many places of interest
to visit in the area.
We have a number of reference books on flora and fauna in the camp,
but feel free to bring your own. A laundry service is available
(no ironing). Bed linen and towels are provided.
We
require the following information in advance: guest's name, age,
height, weight, riding experience in detail and any special dietary
requirements.
We request that you check in at 2 pm on the day of arrival, but
please bear in mind that lunch is not included on that day. On your
day of departure, a full brunch is included before check-out at
12 noon.
Please ensure that you have comprehensive medical and travel insurance
to cover this type of holiday before leaving home. First aid kits
are carried on all rides, and all guides are well trained for emergency
medical attention. Equus Reserve is in a malaria-free area.
In order to make your stay at Equus comfortable, we suggest you
bring the following:
- suitable riding gear (jodhpurs with full or half chaps)
- suitable footwear (comfortable walking/riding boots with
a low heel and rubber soles)
- long sleeved cotton shirts or T-shirts, shorts and sandals
- swimming costume and swimming towel, sunhat (that stays
on your head when riding!) and sunblock
- sweaters and jackets for winter (May to September - warm,
dry days and cool to cold nights)
- waterproof raincoat and hat for summer (October to April
- hot days and pleasant nights, low humidity, short thunderstorms)
- own riding helmet if desired (your choice to wear one)
- camera, film, binoculars and reading matter
